If you have children DO NOT buy an LCD TV.The screens are very fragile .very breakable PLASTIC. When broken not warrantied, not repairable.
References :
The latest issue of Consumer Reports talks about the differences between LCD's and Plasma TV's. I suggest you either buy a copy or go to the public library and read it there.

If you are going very large - 50 to 60 inches, Plasmas are cheaper than LCD's. If you are thinking less than 42 inches then you are going to have to go with LCD's as Plasmas start out at 42 inches.

Also, a good thing to know is that just because you get a new HDTV - if you aren't watching HD sources the picture will actually look worse than a regular TV.
References :
-Liquid crystal display television (LCD TV) is television that uses LCD technology for its visual output. The technology used is generally TFT. In the early 2000s, LCD flat-panels captured a large part of the computer monitor market from traditional CRTs. Continuing advances in LCD TV technology enable it to compete against Plasma flat panels and rear-projection televisions (DLP, LCD, and LCoS) for large-screen HDTV.

-A plasma display panel (PDP) is a type of flat panel display now commonly used for large TV displays (typically above 37-inch or 940 mm). Many tiny cells located between two panels of glass hold an inert mixture of noble gases (neon and xenon). The gas in the cells is electrically turned into a plasma which then excites phosphors to emit light.

i suggest you take LCD my friend. i hope this may help you!
References :
That is a very good question. This whole digital television switch has so many people confused, including me. It appears we all have to pay to watch TV. If you cannot pay, then you will not get anything but static on your TV. That's how they explained on the news today. All the same, you have made a good suggestion and I am going to buy a transistor radio like I use to have when I was a little girl. Thanks!
References :
You should probably wait until the TV gets there but sometimes the installers cary a small one with them.
References :
Ours did that. We paid for a tech to come out and take it in to his shop (it is a 54' big screen) and he opened it up, tested it, and found nothing wrong. He brought it back and the thing never did it again (it's been over a year). We called to tell him and he said it was probably a loose wire connection that got tightened during the routine testing. I would take it to a tech and have them check the connections. It's a bit expensive, but I'd rather have a TV that worked than a TV that shuts itself off.
